In Tactical Breach Wizards, you lead a team of renegade wizards in kevlar through turn-based battles to unravel a modern conspiracy plot. Combine their unique spells in clever ways, or rewind time to try every crazy plan you can think of to punch a Traffic Warlock through a 4th story window.

Based on a very silly premise, this game shows a surprising amount of depth. The writing is refreshingly great. Quirky, but in a good way, witty, sharp and surprisingly insightful. Some might consider this to be too on the nose with the recent uptick in Marvel writing - but for me it worked, because it's not making silly things too serious and serious things too silly. I can't explain it, but I think these guys know how to balance the humor with serious plot stuff, and they also have their own style that differentiates itself from the wannabe Marvel clones. The gameplay is also a very strong part of this game. Carefully crafted skillsets, levels that are both puzzles and battlegrounds, simple but deep action economy offer a ton of various possibilties. And man how I love the rewind feature. It is so fun to actually try things before committing, being able to optimize your turn and push the comboing to it's limits. For those that find the levels too easy, the game features optional objectives - that provide with purely cosmetic upgrades for the characters. On that note - the game really respects the player's time and comfort. It is extremely good at making sure you're enjoying the game and not missing out, without forcibly handholding you. These guys take their design seriously, and I think that the industry has a lot to learn from them on how to do QOL, inclusive features, and providing options. It's all relatively small things that some would disregard but they damn sure do add up. This might be my personal GOTY - and it's a silly game about wizards with guns. Go figure.
defenestration (noun) [dee-fen-uh-stray-shuhn] /diːˌfɛnəˈstreɪʃən/ the act of throwing someone or something out of a window.
I did not know there was an actual term for throwing people out the window. This is now my favorite word. Tactical Breach Wizards is exactly what you would expect from a game called Tactical Breach Wizards. Wizards, in full tactical gear, breaching rooms, kicking ass, casting all sorts of spells and an unreasonable amount of people being thrown out of conveniently placed (for us) windows. A fantastic turnbased tactics game solid combat loop complimented with some nice progression, which keeps things interesting as you progress through the game. Characters are lovable, hilariously written and have tons of tools to play around with. The dialogue is easily the standout of this game and I think voice acting would've made it even better. There is a surprising amount of stuff to keep you occupied between the main story, dream missions, proving grounds and even player made levels. On top of that, there's optional objectives, missions can be replayed with different characters and more. There's plenty of reasons to keep coming back. And best of all, throwing people out the window never gets old. If you're looking for a game with tactics, wizards, breaching and Maximum Defenestration, this is it. Definitely Recommended
Clever and funny without overdoing it. Really well done.
This game has some of the most stylish art, coolest abilities, most well-balanced puzzle encounters, and absolutely snappiest dialog I have ever played. It is an absolute delight from start to finish.
So this game has a problem with writing. It is the most unfunny people in existence constantly trying to be funny, it is genuinely unbearable. I've heard people complain about dialogue before for other games like Forspoken and I always thought "ah people are being a bit too harsh" but not here, I cannot put into words how obnoxious the writing is for this game, whoever wrote it should never be allowed to put pen to paper again. I got through the first two acts reading everything and after that I began skipping literally everything, it's too painful to read. THANKFULLY this game is very generous with what you're allowed to skip, you can skip all dialogue, you can skip this tedious map pinning minigame, hell you can even skip levels if you feel so inclined. If they had just made this game purely gameplay focused with zero writing it'd be so much better. To be fair, the hideous corporate art style should have been a dead giveaway it'd have this type of writing but I like tactics game so I figured I can ignore the art. As for the actual gameplay, early on it's a bit odd and not great. The problem is they make the levels into fairly simple puzzles, where it's easy to complete the level but they add optional challenge objectives like kill X enemies in a certain manner, or finish in so many turns, however these challenges are usually dependent upon you having specific upgrades unlocked that you get as you level so if you didn't take that specific upgrade you can't do the challenge and are just stuck with an easy level. Now that's early on, the later levels tend to be better as you get more units and more abilities so you can tackle the levels in different ways and with the amounts of enemies coming in and what's going on it starts to feel more tactics focused and less like puzzles with very clear solutions. They did a pretty good job with the abilities, I was a bit worried it'd just be like using guns except you're shooting fire and ice, but no they got creative with the various styles of magic and each unit plays completely differently. So overall, if you skip all of the dialogue and can push through the weak start I think you can get to a pretty fun tactics game, but this game is just weighed down so much by having to press skip so much, looking at a very uninteresting art style, and a lackluster early game it's hard to recommend. I hope in the future the team could just focus on gameplay and grab a different artstyle, maybe make something like an Into the Breach or The Last Spell.
