• Rarely could a remake/rewrite achieve the levels Resident Evil 4 reached. Now that it's been a few years since this release, I have the thoughts to write my review. Vastly different in tone from the original, there was a bar set so high that an Olympic pole-vaulter easily could've missed, and yet they managed to craft a refreshing experience on the foundation of the bones, marrow and chilled blood of the RE4 we all know and love. RE4 is arguably my favorite video game of all time, I played through it more times than I could count since I was young and loved it equally or more every time. This remake satisfied essentially every itch to be scratched, the greatly improved script (I love the campiness of the original, but a 1:1 remake would've been eye-rolling), smooth controls that lend themselves to the action-oriented terror and that ever-familiar atmosphere throughout the very extensive journey of our leading man Leon Kennedy. One of the most impactful changes they made was the rewrite of Ashley's character. I didn't have too many issues with the original, but in RE4R, she is so very well fleshed out and charming, contributing a depth and investment in her dynamic with Leon and the violent, horrifying world closing in around them. Not to mention her cheering you on in the shooting gallery was just about the most motivating thing possible. Excellent voice acting and character progression, I give an earnest thank-you to the writers for giving us this new look at a character we spend a great deal of time with. The lore presented through collectibles gives us much more insight into the characters as well, and while optional, I'm always glad when developers provide us with snippets into the thoughts, emotions and lives of those who inhabit the world we are plugged into. More than once I was caught off guard by how moved I was by the backstories of certain characters, and that connection only deepened my experience with the game as whole. The challenge still exists, I went with the confidence of a veteran RE4 player on the higher difficulties and found myself more than adequately impressed with how often I found myself on the back foot. The enemies don't just feel like fodder. The bosses are not only imposing, but quite cinematic in the same vein as the original. There's a true sense of accomplishment when you reach the end of this journey, and I couldn't be happier with what they changed, what they maintained, and what they greatly improved. As with the original, the replay value is vast. It's okay to be afraid...and it's also okay to stick a knife in the neck of a bloodthirsty Los Plagas trying to cut your head off. All that matters is you keep moving forward.

 • I've tried to like it and kept going through chapter 5, but Leon is NOT mobile enough for half the things this games asks, enemy health is FAR too inconsistent where even basic enemies take from 1 to 6 headshots for example, and more often than not it's just a gank simulator. Also performance suffered greatly after chapter 2 despite being able to play it on near max setting without any issues prior

 • One of the best experiences AAA has to offer is still average Now that the honeymoon phase from 2023 is over and I've grown out of modern Resident Evil, I'll give my final thoughts after giving the game another go years later. If we don't take the original into consideration, then this is somewhat okay on its own, but this version doesn't respect the original craft. The story makes less sense when compared to the 2005 release, and the lack of consistency and attention to plot details is telling. Characters feel like a shell of their former selves, and the game feels wildly inconsistent in tone as it can't decide if it wants to feel serious or if it wants Leon to crack jokes to an annoying degree. It lacks art style, with the only remotely interesting looking area of the game being the castle in certain rooms, and the sound design is extremely mediocre overall, which both take away from the eerie feel of the original. It uses the typical modern minimalistic stock UI that most AAA games and some AA games tend to use nowadays, and the splash art for the end chapters was outright removed, taking away some of its personality. The level design clashes with the gameplay as it reuses design philosophies that fit better with the old AI behavior and control scheme, the fact the game doesn't make use of tank controls takes away from any tension there was in the original on a first playthrough since you can see what is behind you even when Leon and Ada are looking the opposite direction, yellow paint can't be toggled off, and the adaptive difficulty is even more jarring than it originally was, which is extremely insulting when the game is already easy, even on Professional, ultimately treating me like I'm incapable of playing the game on my own. This is not a remake but rather a reimagining, as it changes core plot elements, its tone, remixes and adds new map layouts, changes how characters control, adds new gameplay elements, and gets rid of the stylized art style of the original. CAPCOM has stated that the new versions are reimaginings. The only remake to ever grace this franchise was Resident Evil 1, as it's the only that preserves the original vision by retaining its control scheme, layout, plot, and style. This is definitely a product of its time.

 • Obviously going to be the odd one out here, but I found the game really boring and tedious. I've forced myself to play an extra hour or two than I wanted. 7 hours in, I've lost all interest. The atmosphere & setting is great at first, once you get over that, the very simple combat and uninteresting story/characters doesn't do enough to keep me invested or curious. It feels like a chore. I did enjoy Resident Evil 2 Remake tho! I guess I was expecting a similar experience to that. this one Loses the immersion and same intensity that game provided. I was worried before buying the game that it would actually be too scary for me as I'm not a big fan of horror games. The start of the game does great to pull you in, and set a very spooky immersive vibe. Then the game slowly gets more ridiculous and comedic almost, losing that immersion and initial hook for me. Nostalgia might be carrying this one hard, I wanted to love it but maybe its just not for me.
