It Steals, Mario Party as a horror game
A more fitting and relatable comparison than Mario Party is simply impossible for a game like It Steals. Broken down, it's nothing more than a small collection of five minigames, each with their own unique monster and gameplay, but it genuinely feels like playing Mario Party minigames. The presentation is simple and doesn't demand a lot of skill, meaning even a casual player can get used to the games relatively quickly. Take Shutter Mode, for example. The concept is simple: flash the monster with your camera, make sure the battery doesn't run out, and collect orbs. Simple, fun, and with an extremely low skill ceiling that makes it accessible to basically everyone. This is where I feel the Mario Party comparison lands. You don't need gaming skills or in depth knowledge to enjoy It Steals to its fullest because it basically consists of "party games." But that's where the magic comes from. They're fun and engaging, and best of all, the horror lands. It really does. That's where, in my opinion, a weird fusion happens. The simplicity of a party game and the horror of an established, serious horror game give the player a mixture of joy and fear that makes It Steals a one of a kind experience.
Satisfyingly scary with unique game types
tubular. different dudes out to get me. tubular.
I had an incredibly fun time with this game, even if it was fairly short. Despite that, my goodness it made me jump a few times. The scares are quite good and I enjoyed most of the modes (Except for 'Living Halls', which just felt really bland and boring) and their additional challenges. They all felt unique and different enough to not feel repetitive, and the achievements added an additional challenge to beat alongside the modes. Overall, a solid 10/10.
