Incredibly fun touhou themed metroidvania game. The combat and movement is really fun and fluid and the bosses are all unique and super interesting. The time stop mechanic is utilized really well in the level in the form of mini puzzles and in enemies/bosses attack patterns which makes it really fun. The exploration/secrets are nicely spread out through the world and every ability you find gives you some new unique thing to do and way to interact with the puzzles and enemies. All in all this was a great game, my only minor complaint is that once you unlock the ability 1000 dagger throw every boss becomes rather trivial since you are invincible while casting it and it takes a few seconds to finish so while you cast the ability and do a lot of damage to the boss you also graze EVERYTHING that is shot at you meaning you regain the mana that you use for the ability back plus HP and time. It felt a bit like an exploit using this ability that basically just makes it so that you are full mana and HP all the time while also doing a lot of damage but its not a big issue since you can just not use that ability as well. Other than that a really great and fun game.
Luna Nights is a metroidvania-style Touhou Project game. You play as the Perfect and Elegant Maid Sakuya and have to fight the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil cast (with 1 exception- one character from Mountain of Faith). The game is easy if you learn to use Sakuya's time manipulation (snail and timestop) in addition to learning the patterns of the bosses (grazing enemy attacks grants HP and MP recovery). I do wish that the first two bosses had more of a bullet hell nature- I found myself enjoying the latter bosses. Like most Touhou Project games, Luna Nights has a great soundtrack. My favorite track is Studio Ladybug's rendition of The Maid and The Pocket Watch of Blood- the stage 2 theme. I will say- I am dissapointed in how they used Lunar Dial, the boss theme for Sakuya, as the stage 1 theme. My biggest criticism of the game is the story- it's extremely barebones and doesn't capture the witty dialogue that can be present within Touhou Project. I would recommend Luna Nights for someone who wants a combination of bullet hell and metroidvania. I would not recommend this game if you are looking to get into Touhou Project for the story. P.S. Studio Ladybug please add Rumia to Luna Nights 2. Thanks.
Great game for Touhou fan, as all the featured characters are written quite funny and stay true to their role in the OG universe. The music remains the signature of the franchise with very high-speed, energetic songs, thou there are only one track per region so if you get stuck it'll get old fast. I love all the references in this game tho. Sometimes I even feel bad as some enemies are just too cute. For people who's looking for a metroidvania game, it's not Hollow Knight, but this game is snack-size that you can pick up and finish in 1-2 sessions. The badass mechanic of time manipulation is something this game nails really well. Games also feature a boss rush after you finish everything else in the game, the thing is the bosses stay the same as the first time you face them so you can wipe the floor with the first few bosses. I think the mode is an afterthought after they've finished everything else so it's quite imbalance (for the bosses). Small tip: after a tough boss fight you should go back to the previous checkpoint to save and heal up. If you die in the next screen before saving you'll have to do the boss fight again.
PEAK GAME, i love it!!!!!
It is a fun game, but there a ton of Metroidvanias that are a lot better than this. Only get this game if you are a diehard Touhou Fan or someone who absoluetely loves Metroidvanias.
