This game was so beautiful... the entire chapter clinging onto the concept of "atonment" and "sharing your sins in attempt for forgiveness" is what this entire story was all about. this entire chapter the game wants you to realize and reflect on how atoning for your sins is something that completes a friendship. they want you to understand but also ask your self, are you even friends with the people you love and hangout with, if you cant come hand in hand to share, and ask for help, as well as asking for forgiveness between each other. For the horror elements of this chapter, i really like the small but crazy detail of Rena's pov, where the farther she descends into her crazy delusions, the color of the text gets darker, and darker the farther she collapses. her crazy wild behavior reminds me a lot of shion in chapt.5 where shion was slowly getting more untrustworthy of the people around her. The sadness of the story begins when you realize that Rena forgets that promise they all made with each other. every single one of them promised to help rena hide the bodies, as well ask atone for their sins together and further assist each other with whatever help they need, referencing satoshi's issue as an example. you begin to realize the more you read that renas sanity and strength to hold on to these "promises" they made fades away the more she dives into the craziness of the curse. the title of this chapter meaning atonement is so important because it acts as a constant reminder that rena is slowly losing this idea, where as all her friends are still trying to break her from this delusion, promising to help her and still have her back, showing that they didn't forget about the true purpose of friendship. Rika was acting weiurd asf the whole time and i kinda see some truth in takano's scrapbooks and ideas, but i really like how this story dived into the core meaning of friendship, rather than completely 100% focusing on the horror elements of the story. the battle at the end with keiichi and rena just shows to you that rena never truly lost her strength. Rena still held on to the core beliefs of friendship, she was just blind sighted by the delusions of the curse. keiichi "wakes her up" and helps her find the extra bit of strength she needs, to fully break free. Iloved this chapter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I played this 8 years ago and still think about it a lot. Mostly in terms of relying on your friends. The author's background as a social worker really shines through... A real friend will show up when you need a shovel. You can't bury the bodies on your own.
the fat detective is starting to grow on me unfortunately
