  • Before i start the actual review I want to point out that Hunt Showdown is an EXTRACTION SHOOTER. These games are very often defined by slow gameplay, high stakes, permadeath and most importantly dying often. If these concepts seem annoying to you and ruin the experience for you, then Hunt will most probably not be your game and dropping a bad review about it being the game that it is doesn’t help that fact. If you do like those concepts, then the game is in my opinion one of the best Titles in the genre and there are many dopamine hits to be chased. Now to the more detailed stuff: I have played around 1100 hours. A few years ago the game was maybe more grounded than before, which in my opinion has pros and cons. I find the event mechanics interesting and they definitely impact the gameplay more than before, but sometimes maybe a bit too much. I did enjoy the older „event“ system more, because grinding a battle pass is always a commitment and the event skins felt a bit more „thought out“ (some battle pass skins are still solid and the new one looks quite good, but some skins maybe feel slightly lazy, as they just repeat the same design with a few weapons) The gunplay is still nice, you can still play every gun in the game and at least in my opinion you don’t have to cuckhold yourself with meta gear. Other loadouts are fun too, and every gun (even the deringer) has enough kill potential to be able to do something. The new guns often tend to be stronger at launch, but never unrepairably broken. My biggest criticism of the game would be the long term progression. While prestigeing does serve that purpose it doesn’t feel too impactful or rewarding, as it is just a number going up. The hunter tier progression was IMO pretty nice, though that system removed some of the cooler looking tier 3 hunter variants, so it would be cool if those could be added back as some form of progression reward or variant too. Other long term goals, that go side by side with the prestige system would be very cool, as that would make the long term incentive to play more stable. If you‘ve read this far and you have decided to buy the game, maybe we’ll see in the bayou. Have Fun!

Negative

  • After more than 2,300 hours, I can no longer recommend Hunt. This game has been in development for over eight years, yet Crytek would rather pump out endless events, Battle Passes, and cosmetic DLCs than fix its rotten foundations. You fall through the ground near certain ledges, move around like you have ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bars of soap strapped to your boots, perfectly placed shots simply fail to register, trades are ridiculous, audio sometimes becomes unreliable, and high-ping players are still allowed to ruin servers in other regions. Once you reach a certain skill level, these “minor issues” are no longer simple annoyances: they completely invalidate matches. All the time spent mastering the game, reading situations, and making the right decisions? You can shove it up your ass—your match just got ruined by some tiny detail completely unrelated to your skill. It also took eight years to receive compensation when a cheater is finally caught—and even that comes with caveats. Not to mention the supposedly fixed bugs that magically return with the next update. The art team is the only team that deserves any praise. They continue to create outstanding designs for a game that is technically inexcusable for its age. Crytek has a gem on its hands and would rather cover it in paid costumes than make it work properly. Hunt is only surviving because it has no real competitor. The day another studio takes this concept and setting and builds it on solid technical foundations, you are completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

  • I've played this game with so much love and passion. But recently, the fun and excitement I used to get from it have completely vanished. First, the good things: The gunplay is AMAZING. I would always defend this game when talking to other people and tell them that it has some of the best shooter mechanics out there. The sound design is also absolutely fantastic. You really learn to appreciate how well-crafted it is when using high-end headphones. Being able to hear enemies before they can hear you adds so much to the experience. If we're talking solely about the game itself, I would always recommend it. Now comes the bad part. And I'm saying this from the perspective of a 6-Star MMR player. The lobbies are divided into different MMR ratings from 1 to 6 Stars, with 6 Stars being the highest. The game has a severe problem with the European servers, where I feel like I'm being matched with Russian and Chinese players most of the time. And when I say most of the time, I mean around 90% of my matches. The difference between encountering a European team and encountering a high-ping team (usually Russian/Chinese) is incredibly frustrating. When I get killed by a European team, I usually don't think twice about it. I know I got outplayed, made a mistake, or simply lost the fight. But when I get killed in certain situations by players from outside Europe, I often find myself thinking: "How the hell did I just die there?" Then I check the player's profile and see where they're from, and it happens far too often. Far too often meaning i feel like i'm only getting killed from High-Ping Teams anymore. What I'm talking about is the insane difference that high ping can make in gunfights. Whether it's hit registration, peeker's advantage, or simply the way players appear and disappear around corners, the experience can feel completely different. And honestly, it's becoming so frustrating that it has taken away almost all of the fun and excitement I used to have for this game. I don't mind losing. I don't mind getting outplayed. That's part of the game. What I do mind is feeling like the outcome of a gunfight was determined by connection quality rather than by who played the situation better. It's especially frustrating because I genuinely love this game. The gunplay, the sound design, the atmosphere — all of it is fantastic. I want to enjoy it, but playing at 6 Stars on the European servers has become increasingly exhausting. And then there's another thing I simply don't understand: I've encountered players who apparently already have VAC bans on their profiles, yet they're still able to play the game. How is that even possible? The lack of communication from Crytek makes this even more frustrating. The developers have actually acknowledged these problems in the past. Around 1.5 years ago, Crytek talked about potential solutions such as region blocking or preventing players from joining certain servers if their ping exceeds a specific threshold. At the time, I was genuinely hopeful that something would eventually be done about it. But since then, there has been very little to no communication about this issue. 1.5 years is a long time when you're dealing with a problem that directly affects the experience of your most dedicated players. I don't expect the developers to magically fix everything overnight. But I do expect some kind of communication. Tell us what you're working on. Tell us if the proposed solutions aren't technically feasible. Tell us if the problem is more complicated than expected. Just communicate with the community. The current lack of communication regarding this particular issue has been really disappointing, at least from my personal perspective. I really hope the developers take a serious look at the current state of matchmaking and high-ping gameplay. Because underneath all of this, there is an incredible shooter.

  • This game can be fun but with the current match making I say run away far far away from this game, If you're a new player you will like it until the new wears off then once you reach 3-4 stars you will be going against 5-6 star no life players non stop and why Crytek doesn't fix the horrible match making is beyond me but it ruins what could be a really good game.
