Wonderfully silly the whole way through! Especially good for a game that's about one Castration Movie long
Sometimes the most interesting things hide behind the most unassuming packages. Hylics was published in 2015 and can be described as a traditional JRPG, although in the steam page it is described as a “recreational program”, made with the RPGmaker engine, but it is filled with creative choices not often seen in games. The game consists of the exploration of surrealistic dreamscapes, interaction with characters with random dialog that makes little to no sense, gathering a group of friends, and fighting creative characters. Although the game can be completed in a short time, you can spend as much time as you want exploring all the different settings beautifully created using a combination of Claymation and animation. Divided into chapters, the game’s progression follows the player exploration since most of the information that can be extracted from characters is mostly non-sensical. Considering the impressive art style and fitting soundtrack it’s hard not to urge anyone that is any bit interested to play this game. It’s simply a different visual experience that must experienced. Wayne and friends commit mass genocide because yes
i really, really dig this ♥♥♥♥ so far. the atmosphere mixes nicely with IPA and the characters/combat systems are as relaxing as they are challenging to face. this game is a warm hug. on second thought, maybe that's the cannabis and IPA.
I hate to be that guy but as for this game... I don't see why it's such a cult classic. There's absolutely zero context for anything, dialogue is 90% randomized nonsense, gameplay is okay I suppose, but it's a really cut and dry affair. The only stand-out feature is the unique artstyle. Had I known that I would've seriously reconsidered, but if you have a couple spare bucks and couple spare hours you can see for yourself, at least the price of admission is fair.
Hylics is a ton of fun and the unique art style and bizarre world are charming and well done. However, I have a skill issue with getting around those ghosts that kill you when they touch you.
