78 hours. Bought this years ago on a Christmas sale and it's been quietly eating my evenings ever since. Yes, it looks like a sad stickman mood board. No, you will not care after your colonist loses a leg, his wife, and his mind in that order within one in-game week. The workshop content alone is basically a second game — RimWorld with mods is one of the best experiences in gaming, RimWorld without mods is still pretty great, and RimWorld with my budgeting skills is why I've never bought a single DLC. Those things cost more than my first two games combined. 9/10 storytelling, 3/10 for my colony's survival rate, 1/10 for my wallet.
I absolutely would recommend this game. Play with mods. It's fantastic. There are no other games this good and content rich on steam.
I played this game intially after Sips' inital video on Rimworld 12 years ago. I was a kid and pirated the game. 6 years ago I brought Rimworld instead of downloading the latest version on Pirate Bay and since them I have put in 1836 hours in. Close to 2K hours put in after already playing the game for 6 years says more than anything else I could ever write.
Rimworld is the game you log in to play for 30 minutes and then keep saying to yourself "I just need 5 more minutes and let's wrap things up for now" till 4 am (literally the time I logged off today).
the DLC costs so much man...
I've played the vanilla version still too many "wtf" moments... I play on a relatively easy mode, and you still get constant raids. Form and caravan... will they depart? Nope! Upsetting.... but there's a button for "Force caravan departure". Good. Click. Does the caravan depart? Nope!!! Colonist goes on a sadistic rampage... Completely unrelated to the caravan departing... then another colonist gives up on the colony and leaves I just want the caravan to go so I can do the quest and progress in the game [why is this so painful]
I realize I have a lot of hours on this game but in the end, it's hard to recommend. There is a Storyteller concept but most of the "stories" are events that are remarkably static in design. At the end of the day, even with the DLCs and some wonderful mods, this is a sandbox game with the odds stacked against you - sometimes to ridiculous levels without any real story. It's a collection of some interesting ideas and many missed opportunities. (If you're okay with a sandbox survival game without any real narrative, then you'll probably enjoy it.)
after almost a decade still terribly unfinished and clanky. generously allowing the community to fix your game for free with myriads of mods truly was a stroke of genius, tynan. this move allowed you to focus on what's truly important - further ripping off Dwarf Fortress (royalty), introducing more of your brand fanfic drivel (biotech, anomaly) and paying tribute to the community by ripping off the top mods (odyssey). for the latter, I somehow doubt any other form of payment was involved, like eg. Factorio (which is what a finished game looks like) guys hiring the top modder for the xpac development. the way you've been shilling your "book" in-game is however pretty funny.
