  • I was curious about Doki Doki Literature Club because of the contradiction built into it. At first, I found it painfully cutesy, cringey and tedious. Then I realized the game was using exactly that innocence against me. That contrast is easily its strongest feature. DDLC understands that something disturbing becomes much more effective when it invades a space that has already taught you to feel safe. The sweetness, repetition and familiarity stop being comforting and start becoming suspicious. The game doesn’t just try to scare you; it gradually makes you distrust the emotional rules it taught you in the first place. Scared? Not really. Caught off guard? A couple times. Disturbed? Oh, yeah. For a while, I thought the game was shallow and transparently manipulative, more interested in getting under your skin than actually saying much. It sometimes seems so determined to destabilize the player that you can almost see the machinery behind it. But there is more going on underneath that than I initially gave it credit for. DDLC touches on loneliness, depression, dependency, social expectations, the way people hide suffering, and the strange intimacy that can exist between a person and something that isn’t actually capable of knowing them. Some of those ideas are handled better than others, but a few stayed with me. Something I found interesting is that the game turns discomfort itself into part of the experience. You’re not just watching something unpleasant happen; you’re constantly being made aware of your own curiosity, attachment, unease and willingness to continue in spite of it all. I also appreciated that DDLC wasn’t afraid to engage directly with subjects that are usually kept at a safer distance, although there were moments where it felt almost too eager to make them as frightening as possible. I’m still not sure how much of the horror belongs to the subject matter itself, and how much the game creates around it. It’s a very unorthodox game, and definitely worth giving a try if you’re open to an unsettling experience and comfortable engaging with sensitive material.

  • DDLC + is an absolute masterpiece, as a long-time fan, playing this extended edition with the side stories and all was a dream come true ♡ The characters are beautifully written, the story is unforgettable, and the fourth-wall break's are some of my favorite parts of the game ♡♡♡

  • An interesting story on mental illness is turned into cheap shock horror to get reactions from streamers. Ten years later it's still as middling as I remember. Sad I couldn't refund this one, the price tag is defo not worth the 3 hours tops of eye-roll inducing content sometimes sprinkled with competent writing.

  • It is an overrated game. Many of the scary moments had already appeared in numerous similar titles, such as *Irisu Syndrome!* and *Higurashi When They Cry Hou*. Dan Salvato attempts to create lifelike characters the player can empathize with, yet the heroines are never fully fleshed out. We know Natsuki has family issues, but that plot point goes nowhere. I could empathize more with this character if she had been fleshed out more as a person showing why she is the way she is and how she views the world so that later, in Act 2, Monika could force her to go against her own rules, desires, and feelings. The only character I can truly empathize with or judge is Monika. Why should I care about characters I know absolutely nothing about? The game features a mechanic for deleting character files, but it is used only once for plot and solely for secret scenes that aren't particularly interesting. The main characters write poems expressing their feelings and thoughts, yet this offers little insight into who they really are. The game has potential, but it isn't fully realized because the experience is too short. Okay, the game has a couple of genuinely scary moments. However, the game has its upsides, such as the atmosphere and music, as well as secret moments. It is short but can evoke strong emotions. If you aren't looking for a complex psychological story, it’s a very good choice. Not a terrible game for its time to complete and the price is why not. But there are games that do a much better job of doing Doki Doki, and the game is not revolutionary as it likes to be described on the Internet.

  • The biggest fault of this game is that a VN game must have at least 2 endings. The "endings" you get is just chapter endings, even the true ending is not that special but a thank you message. About the "horror" themes, I like that at first it's quite subtle, but then it's just become a tool for shock scene and exploitation, because it want to be an edgy game. Sure at times it feels creepy, but that's it, there's no deeper substance aside from the dev just want to shock the players, most often using jump scares. I don't know, maybe I will recommend this game to.... a high school student that's currently exploring a different game genre and theme. I bought this game because the free version crashed on chapter 2 on my pc. So if you've played the free version and want to support the dev, go ahead buy this version. But if you haven't played DDLC and curious what makes it popular, temper you expectation and treat this game as a VN experiment instead of a "serious" VN.
